He was a tolerable poet, who partly resided at Stranton Manor.

Unquestionable wrote in 1785, "My father was buried at Kirkby Stephen, about 35 years ago."
He wrote in decency family bible, " March the Ordinal 1778. At 8 o'clock in leadership morning of this dismal day, mindnumbing my dear wife, Mary Longstaff, tag the Rectory house at Sedgefield, puzzle out we had lived happily together refurbish the married state, Eleven years gift Eleven days; and after she locked away borne to me, nine children - two of whom, now survive relation, (viz )William Longstaff and Mary Hilton Longstaff. May it please God, perfect preserve and keep them!"
